Samuel Johnson, one of the most famous figures of the 18th century, was
born in the City on the 18th September 1709. His house in Breadmarket
Street facing the market square, is now a museum to his life, work and
personality.
2009 was the 300th anniversary of the birth of Doctor Johnson,
Lichfield's most famous son; and the City Council lead the celebrations
which saw Lichfield at the centre of a national calendar of events, with
focus on the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. The celebrations were
widespread and culminated in a free 'Johnson at 300' festival in
September, the highlight of which was a spectacular and very successful
open air sound and light show projected onto the Museum on the evening
of 18th September in front of a huge audience.
