Sheriff's Ride
On a very wet Saturday morning, the Sheriff of Lichfield, Councillor
Norma Bacon led the ride out of the City in a splendid horse drawn
carriage accompanied by a party of 32 riders. Amongst the lead riders
were the High Sheriff of Staffordshire, Mrs Katie Evans accompanied by
Honorary Alderman John Brooks.
Despite the weather, the ride followed a circuit of Lichfield, taking in
the traditional lunchtime stop at Freeford Manor. The Sheriff together
with over 120 guests enjoyed a buffet lunch under canvas entertained by
the Lichfield City Concert Band.
The winner of the Best Presented Horse and Rider was newcomer to the
ride, Mrs Jill Francis riding Zeppie. The Mike Goddard Marshal's Award
was presented to Ms Jo-Anne Lloyd.
The atmosphere through out the day remained buoyant; with riders
commenting on the fantastic sense of camaraderie generated somewhat,
perhaps, due to the inclement conditions. The going was soft underfoot but the riders still managed a few good gallops.
Under Sheriff, John Haggett commented that the Ride had continued even
through the war years and wasn't going to be put off by a little rain!
The Sheriff would like to thank all those who helped with the ride and
made the day, in the end so successful.
