LICHFIELD LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS
Published: 04 December 2012
An enormous crowd filled Lichfield Market Square on a chilly but dry 29 November to witness the re-scheduled switching on of the Christmas lights, which had been postponed from the previous Thursday due to severe weather conditions.
Performing the switch-on was the Mayor, Councillor Mrs Janet Eagland and Steve Huison who is starring as The White Rabbit in the Garrick Theatre Christmas family production of 'Alice in Wonderland' supported by the entire cast, and ably helped by children's competition winners Harriet Granahan and William Dale.
This year the event also featured a number of live performances from local musicians Tom Woodman and his band, Dean James, Fret and Fiddle and Rebel Creek; together with more traditional community carols led by Sue Allister and the Christ Church Primary School choir.
The lights are provided by the City Council with financial support from Lichfield Chamber of Trade and from various shops and businesses in the City. Local contractors Derryford Electrical spent three weeks erecting the lighting features which feature over 5,000 bulbs across the main City Centre streets and around the Market Square.
Our thanks go to all those who helped with the event organisation: Lichfield Chamber of Trade & Commerce; Ken Knowles and Dave Simcox (MC's); Lichfield Arts; Cannock Sound Hire; The Plant Plot Garden Centre; St John Ambulance; Lichfield Police; Lichfield Mercury; the Bower Queen and her Deputy; the Round Table, and of course Santa!
The City Council gratefully acknowledges financial support received from: Lichfield Chamber of Trade & Commerce; Lichfield District Council; Local County Councillors Mrs Janet Eagland and Alan White; Friary Shoes; Ansons Solicitors; Tudor of Lichfield; Kingston's; the Kitchen Shop; Moseleys Solicitors; Salloways; and the Lichfield Gazette.
