Christmas Lights Switch-On

Published: 01 December 2015

The traditional Christmas Lights switch-on ceremony in Lichfield scheduled to take place on 29 November 2015 was unfortunately cancelled for safety reasons due to severe weather conditions over the weekend.

The City Council which organises the lights in the City centre each year had considered whether to try to rearrange the switch-on. However, there was no early availability of the Market Square for a rescheduled ceremony, and since the event already fell at the end of November, there was a keen desire to see the lights on as soon as possible.

In consultation with the Chamber of Trade and other organisations, the decision was taken to go ahead and turn on the lights on 1st December without the usual ceremony.

Town Clerk, Christopher Moulton said:

"We know that the Christmas Lights in the City centre add to the ambience and shopping experience in the run up the Christmas, and we did not want to delay the switch-on into December and the first week of the busy shopping period.

We share the disappointment felt by those who were looking forward to the event, but unfortunately a combination of circumstances has led us to conclude that the immediate switch-on of the lights is the best way forward for the City".
