Shrovetide Fair & Pancake Races – Tuesday 21 February 2023

Mayor and winner of the ladies race holdign the trophy

Lichfield celebrated Shrove Tuesday with hotly contested pancake races in the city centre. Keen entrants gathered in Bore Street for the time-honoured event at noon, determined to put in a “pan-tastic” performance. The skies remained clear as the races were announced by our exuberant town crier Adrian Holmes, in the presence of Lichfield Mayor, Cllr Jamie Checkland, Mayoress Stephanie Checkland, Sheriff of Lichfield, Cllr Janice Greaves, Sheriff’s Consort Keith Greaves and Chairman of Lichfield District Council, Cllr Colin Greatorex.

There were plenty of willing entrants necessitating six ladies’ heats, three Gents heats, one Mascots’ Race & four Under 10’s races. Each race saw entrants run along Bore Street towards the Guildhall, flipping their pancake once at the start and again shortly before the finish line with larger than usual crowds gathered around the starting & finishing line, largely due to Half term. It was great to see so many excited children getting involved.

The winner of the ladies’ final was Hollie Nelson, who works for Connells Estate Agents. Hollie will now have her name etched upon the special Golden Pancake Day trophy. She has also won a £100 Restaurant Voucher, donated by Davison’s Law on Bore Street.

The winner of the men’s’ race was Issa Husain from EPO Solicitors winning a cash prize of £30.

The winner of the children’s race was Rosie Colley, aged 6. Rosie was presented with a certificate, medal and a £25 Entertainer voucher, kindly donated by A-Plan Insurance who were also giving out free pancakes during the races. A big well done to Rosie & all the children who took part!

Victorious in the Mascots Race was Austin Brauser, who ran dressed as a pizza! He scooped a £30 prize.

Following the races, the Civic party made its way to the Market Square where the Mayor opened the Shrovetide fair and children enjoyed a free ride.

The pancake races were organised by Lichfield City Council who would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring this year’s prizes, A-Plan Insurance, Davison’s Law & Tesco Extra for providing sweets to the children throughout the race.

The City Council would also like to thank the following local businesses for getting involved: Keelys LLP, The George Hotel, Tenet Mortgage Services, John German, The Hub at St Marys, White Stuff, George IV, the Garrick Theatre & BBC Radio West Midlands.
